Reciever marked 'cal 30-06' and 'model 1903A3' in small letters, NATL ORD and serial # (5xxxxxx) larger, normal size letters, markings parallel on reciever, not across top. No cartouches or marks on stock visible. 1903 and 1903A3 Production and Serial No table. Actual assembled rifles in the Remington warehouse inventory awaiting Ordnance inspection as shown on the Planning Supervisor’s “Accounting Summary” dated March 9, 1943. No such comparable statistics are known to exist beyond February 1943.

1903a3 Serial Number Range
I just purchased a sporterized Smith Corona M1903A3 from Gunbroker. When I picked it up from my FFL01 (sporterized stock makes it non-C&R, although scope does not), I noticed that the serial number was C3711163.
A little research indicates that it is outside the 'established' range of Smith Corona M1903A3 SNs, and this is why the 'C' was stamped on it.
In another thread, on another forum, John Beard seems to corroborate this.
Pity a unique rifle like this was drilled and tapped!
